The First Visit
What to Expect
-
A thorough examination of your child's teeth, gums, and mouth.
Infants and toddlers will be examined by a knee-to-knee examination approach, where the child remains on the caregiver's lap.
-
Depending on their age, a professional cleaning, polishing, and fluoride treatment.
-
Radiographs (x-rays), if indicated.
-
Practical ways to take care of your child's teeth and help lower the risk of getting cavities, including diet recommendations and oral hygiene instructions.
-
Tips about oral habits, including finger/thumbsucking and pacifier habits, and teething.
-
A discussion on how to prevent and manage oral and facial trauma.
-
Parents are welcome to sit with the patient for their first visit.
-
As your child grows, regular check-ups at 6-month intervals will allow us to monitor their development and help prevent future cavities.
How to Prepare
-
Before the visit, talk to your child about the fun and positive aspects of a dental visit.
-
Tell your child that the pediatric dentist is a friendly doctor who takes care of kids' teeth, and she will count and brush your teeth.
-
We recommend avoiding words like hurt, needle, shot, drill or other words that may create anxiety or fear.
-
Practice brushing and flossing at home so that your child is familiar with someone treating their mouth.
